Abstract

Smith corresponded with geologists and exchanged mineral samples with various people. He also corresponded about his mining ventures with Noble Gold Mining Company and American Consolidated Gold and Silver Mining Company, and about mining equipment and processes with various people. Correspondents are from Denver, Central City, Boulder, Canon City, Black Hawk, Magnolia, Balarat, Longmont, Leadville, and Jamestown. Some of the correspondence was written to Smith in his capacity as State Geologist, or while he had his own business in Denver evaluating mining properties.

Smith was sent to Colorado in 1864 by the Noble Gold Mining Company, a group of Boston investors, to examine and report on certain mining properties in and around Central City. There he became editor of the Miner's Register, a journal on mineral resources in Colorado.
